Top 10 Unforgettable Moments in Sports History

The majority of the sports world has been put on hold, and it seems like a lifetime since we last watched a fan-attended major sporting event on TV. As professional leagues make plans for their return, we've gathered some of sports' most important and memorable moments, from history-making legends and dynasties to the triumphs that rallied a nation.

1: Tiger Woods Wins the 1997 Masters, Hugs Dad

After becoming the youngest Masters winner at 21 (and dominating his first major championship win by a staggering 12-stroke margin), Woods embraced his father, Earl, in an emotional moment that would mark the beginning of his storied career.

2: The Miracle on Ice

Against the backdrop of the Cold War, the story of the gritty underdog U.S. hockey team and their unlikely defeat of the powerhouse Soviet Union at the 1980 Olympics will live on in the hearts of Americans forever.

3: Serena Williams Wins First Grand Slam

One of the greatest athletes of all time, Williams captured her first Grand Slam win as a 17-year- old at the 1999 U.S. Open. She credits it for kick-starting her career.

4: Michael Jordan's Final Shot as a Chicago Bull

How else could it have ended? Jordan clinched the 1998 NBA title (Chicago’s third straight and sixth championship in eight seasons) with a game-winning shot from the top of the key—his last in a Bulls uniform.

5: Brandi Chastain's World Cup-Winning PK

After 120 sweltering minutes of play in the summer of 1999, Brandi Chastain fired her (surprisingly left-foot) penalty kick to the top right corner of China’s goal, winning Team USA the FIFA Women’s World Cup in front of 90,000 fans. The win (and subsequent celebration in her black Nike sports bra) became a banner moment for females in sports.

6: Jackie Robinson Breaks the Color Barrier

On April 15, 1947, Robinson became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball, starting at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers and forever changing the complexion and history of the game.

7: 'Rumble in the Jungle'

The history-making boxing event in Kinshasa, Zaire, featured a dethroned Muhammad Ali knocking out heavyweight champ George Foreman in eight rounds to take back his crown.

8: Mary Lou Retton's Perfect 10

Before she was a Wheaties box sensation, 16-year-old Retton earned two perfect 10s on floor and vault at the 1984 Olympics and became the first American woman to bring home the gold in the all-around competition.

9: Broken Curses

The Curse of the Bambino began in 1919 when the Boston Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees and didn’t end until 2004, when they won their first World Series in 86 years. In 2005, the Chicago White Sox broke the 85-year Curse of the Black Sox (a gambling scandal) with a World Series win.

10: Miami Dolphins Remain Perfect

It’s 1972, and the Super Bowl-winning Miami Dolphins become the first—and only, to this day— NFL team to go undefeated throughout the regular season and playoffs.
