2024 Kia Seltos

The 2024 Kia Seltos offers a winning blend of practicality, solid performance and comfort in a compact and well-built package. Its base engine could be stronger, but this value-packed little Kia punches above its weight in nearly every category.

The 2024 Kia Seltos's Number 2 ranking is based on its score within the Subcompact SUVs category. It is a finalist for our 2024 Best Subcompact SUV for the Money award. Currently the Kia Seltos has a score of 8.5 out of 10, which is based on our evaluation of 26 pieces of research and data elements using various sources.

Expert Rating: Our rating is established through qualitative research and analysis of Kia Seltos reviews, as well as hard data points that speak to the Seltos’ safety, reliability, fuel economy and cargo capacity. This rating is continually updated based on the latest information that comes in from our research and data sources.

Drive & Performance: The 2024 Kia Seltos is a pleasant SUV to drive, though it's not especially exciting. Handling is competent, with well-weighted steering and a small turning radius that makes maneuvering in tight urban spaces easier. The Seltos has a taut suspension, which contributes to both better handling dynamics and a firm (but mostly smooth) ride. The cabin can feel jittery when driving over rough pavement, but the Kia's ride quality is comfortable most of the time. The brakes are strong and bring the small SUV to a halt quickly.

The Seltos comes with a choice of two powertrains. LX, S and EX models are equipped with a 146-horsepower four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). X-Line and SX versions come with a 195-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and an eight-speed automatic transmission. S and EX models come standard with front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is available. LX, X-Line and SX models come standard with all-wheel drive.

The base four-cylinder provides enough power to zip around town, but it tends to run out of steam when getting up to freeway speeds. On the plus side, it's highly fuel-efficient. The more powerful turbo-four is better suited for highway commutes and feels noticeably more vigorous when pulling away from a stop. Both transmissions work well, and all-wheel drive adds additional peace of mind when driving in poor weather conditions.

Fuel Economy: The 2024 Seltos gets above-average gas mileage for the subcompact SUV segment. Models with the base four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive get an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. All-wheel-drive versions achieve 27/31 mpg city/highway. Turbo-four models, which come exclusively with all-wheel drive, get 25/27 mpg city/highway, according to the EPA.

Interior: The interior of the 2024 Kia Seltos is one of the nicest in the class. It's modern, well-constructed and feels remarkably fashionable considering its low price point. There are plenty of soft-touch materials — especially in higher-trim models — but some hard plastics are present, which is to be expected in this segment.

The Seltos is a two-row SUV with five seats. The front seats provide sufficient comfort and support, and there's plenty of head- and legroom on offer. The rear seats are short on legroom, but adults can still travel back there on short trips with few complaints. The Seltos' wide windows help the cabin feel more spacious, too. Despite its small size, the Seltos has more cargo room than nearly any other subcompact SUV. The rear cargo hold offers up 26.6 cubic feet of space, and there's 62.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. That's enough room to stow a bike, several large suitcases or some small furniture.

Value: The 2024 Kia Seltos has a good value rating for the subcompact SUV class. We determine value based on the vehicle's estimated total cost of ownership, along with the vehicle's MSRP for its base and top trims.

Safety: The 2024 Seltos gets mostly good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It also comes packed with standard driver-assistance features, such as lane-keep assist, forward automatic emergency braking and automatic high-beam headlights.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for its ease of use, because the lower anchors are set too deeply in the seats.

Quality and Reliability: The 2024 Kia Seltos has a predicted reliability score of 87 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

Critics’ Rating: The 2024 Kia Seltos receives a critics' rating that is good for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.

Pricing: How Much is a 2024 Kia Seltos?

The 2024 Kia Seltos starts at $24,390 for the base LX trim. It comes with standard all-wheel drive and an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. The S trim ($24,990) loses standard all-wheel drive but gains niceties such as a larger touch screen, navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot and additional driver-assistance features. The EX ($25,790) features synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats and wireless device charging. The X-Line ($28,690) regains standard all-wheel drive, along with a 195-horsepower turbo-four engine and unique styling elements. The range-topping SX ($29,990) comes with the turbo-four engine, all-wheel drive and trim-exclusive items such as an eight-speaker Bose audio system and ventilated front seats.

Which Is the Best Kia Seltos Model to Buy?

Unless you plan to frequently load your vehicle up with passengers and heavy cargo, we recommend the EX trim. It comes with a ton of additional standard comfort, tech and driver-assistance features for only $1,400 more than the entry-level model. Upgrading to the EX trim includes the 10.25-inch touch screen and the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, push-button start, wireless device charging, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, roof rails and blind-spot monitoring. The base engine is adequate for running around town, and with front-wheel drive, it's quite fuel-efficient.
