In This Video We Will Talk About What Are the Best Hidden Beaches Around the World? Secret Paradise Spots!
Hidden beaches can make you feel like you’re truly delighting in this earthly paradise. Is there a beautiful gem near you? Find out and plan a trip!
As the cold winter drags on, you may find yourself dreaming away of hidden beaches covered in glittering white sand, swaying palm trees, and crystal-clear water. The sun is shining, and the breeze is tickling your skin as the sand cradles your body like a giant pillow and you drift off to sleep. There’s something quite rejuvenating and calming about spending a few hours on a beach. This feeling is amplified the more off-the-beaten-path you go.
Our travel experts at Let’s Roam have scoured the globe to find idyllic beaches that can provide a welcome respite from the big crowds that you find at many beaches. We’ve included both sprawling white sand beaches and small golden ones. Some are far from civilization while others are relatively close. Some of them are pretty difficult to get to and require buses, boats, and even seaplanes to access. However, everyone knows that the journey is just as important as the destination itself. This is the chance to lean into the adventure and make the most of it!
Discovering the World’s Most Beautiful Hidden Beaches
Below, you will find a list of some of the best “hidden” beaches all over the world. These may not be the big names you think of, like Copacabana or Waikiki, but they’re wonderfully secluded and will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a scene from a postcard.
Cabo Polonio, Uruguay
Uruguay’s coastline is famous throughout South America thanks to its gorgeous sandy beaches and relaxed beach towns. People from Brazil and Argentina usually flock to beachfront towns like Punta de La Este and Punta del Diablo. However, one of the best-kept secrets of the area is the lesser-known town of Cabo Polonio. There’re no roads leading to this tiny hamlet, which is located around four miles from the nearest highway. The only way to get there is by boarding one of the hourly “trucks.” They’ll take you through sand dunes and scrubland before reaching the sprawling village of wooden shacks.
The accommodation and restaurant options are definitely what you would call rustic, but the resident colony of sea lions is welcoming and the impressive stretch of sand surrounding the village is inviting. While this certainly isn’t one of the most secluded beaches on this list, it’s one of the most interesting! Cabo Polonio is located about halfway between the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo and the Brazilian border town of Chuy, so this is an excellent stop on a longer South American trip. English is relatively widely spoken in Uruguay as compared to other parts of South America. Don’t worry if your Spanish isn’t up to par!
Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida
Located about 70 miles off the shore of Key West, Dry Tortugas National Park is only accessible by boat or plane, which makes it feel like it’s one of the most secluded beaches in Florida. The 100-square-mile park consists mostly of crystal-clear water dotted with impressive coral, a handful of islands, and the imposing 19th-century Fort Jefferson. It’s an extremely popular getaway spot for snorkeling, diving, camping, and boating.
It’s possible to charter a seaplane or take a passenger ferry to the Dry Tortugas. You can visit it as a part of a day trip from Key West or spend the night sleeping under the stars. There’s also the possibility of booking a camping/kayaking combo tour if you’re looking for something a bit more active. This is a great way to escape some of the crowds that you find elsewhere in the Sunshine State! Make sure to book well in advance as ferry tickets tend to sell out extremely quickly.
Cumberland Island, Georgia
As the largest and southernmost of Georgia’s 15 barrier islands, Cumberland Island is home to 17 undeveloped miles of secluded white-sand beaches, wide marshes, and virgin maritime forests. Although most of the island is uninhabited except for a few cottages, it’s a great spot for history buffs. They’ll love the opportunity to explore the haunting ruins of one of the Carnegie mansions. It was built by the brother of steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie. History buffs will also enjoy the Georgian-Revival style Plum Orchard and the simple, one-room First African Baptist Church. During your visit, you can spend the day biking, hiking, or sunbathing.
While you’re there, keep an eye out for the loggerhead turtles, feral pigs, and feral horses that call the island home. If you’re lucky, you may spot one! The island is accessible only via a 45-minute boat ride. There’s a ferry that connects it to the town of St. Marys near Fernandina Beach, which lies about halfway between Jacksonville, Florida, and Brunswick, Georgia.
If this doesn’t give you an idea of just how secluded this island is, keep in mind that this is where JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette decided to spend their first night as a married couple, far from the prying eyes of onlookers or tabloid writers. They bedded down at the Greyfield Inn, another former Carnegie mansion, which is still the only hotel on the island. If this is a bit out of your budget, you can also stay at one of the many campgrounds dotted across the island.
Holbox Island, Mexico
Located between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico just off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Holbox is a far cry from the glitzy resorts of Cancun or Tulum and offers a completely different experience at Mexican beach towns. It’s unpaved and relatively undeveloped, with the exception of the adorably laid-back Holbox Village. You’ll love this village’s brightly colored buildings! The island is only partially inhabited and is part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve. It’s home to countless pelicans, flamingos, sea turtles, and even whale sharks (at least for part of the year!).
During your visit, you can sunbathe on the long stretch of virtually untouched beach or go for a swim in the warm water, kayak in the mangroves, or go on a boat tour. Best of all, this car-free paradise boasts beautiful, pristine beaches with astonishingly turquoise water. It only lies just two hours away from Cancun, making it an easy destination to reach even for people who have limited vacation time.
Walvis Bay, Namibia
Some places on Earth are hard to believe are real. Walvis Bay is one of those places. This breathtaking spot is the point where the sparkling blue Atlantic Ocean meets the enormous red sand dunes of the Namib Desert. The area can only be accessed via a guided 4×4 tour from Swakopmund. This means that rather than finding a beach full of people, you are much more likely to get there and find you’re the only group there. While the rough Pacific waters make it impossible to swim, this is a place where you feel like you truly are at the edge of the world. The great thing about visiting Walvis Bay is that it can easily be included as part of a Namibian road trip. You can make time for the Sossusvlei Dunes, Fish River Canyon, Windhoek, Skeleton Coast with its sea of shipwrecks, and even Etosha National Park.
Carova Beach, North Carolina
Located in the far northeastern corner of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Carova Beach offers more than 12 miles of pristine white sand. The community is accessible only via 4×4 or by boat since there are no paved roads. It’s so secluded that it has actually won awards for it! With only 50 year-round residents and a slew of wildlife, you’re probably more likely to spot one of the wild horses than other people during your visit.
This is a great destination for families who want to experience the Outer Banks without having to deal with the standard tourist crowds and who want to embrace a vacation full of solitude and exploration. The hiking trails crisscrossing the forests and the brackish marshes are just waiting to be explored. You can finish off each day relaxing on the beach as the sun goes down.
